Welcome back to CCAAN community! After a mini hiatus, we are excited to reconnect with our members and strengthen conversations around climate change in the Caribbean, a region that remains vulnerable to the effects of climate stressors. From rising temperatures and sea levels to droughts, intense rainfall, hurricanes and threats to food and water security, the impacts of a changing climate are already being felt throughout our islands. As we begin this new chapter, one climate phenomenon worth paying close attention to is El Niño.
Understanding El Nino: What does it mean for the Caribbean?
El Niño is a natural climate pattern characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, often resulting in hotter and drier conditions across the Caribbean. These changes can place pressure on critical sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and water resources, with wider impacts on livelihoods and economies throughout the region. In our upcoming newsletter, we will explore El Niño in greater detail and discuss what its potential effects could mean for the Caribbean.
